Borderless Justice: Advancing Freedom of Movement for Forcibly Displaced Persons in the East and Horn of Africa

The 85th Ordinary Session of the African Commission on Human and People’s Rights (ACHPR), held at the Sir Dawda Kairaba Jawara International Conference Centre in Kololi, Banjul, The Gambia, under the theme “Year of Justice for Africans and People of African Descent through Reparations,” will bring together governments, human rights institutions, civil society organizations, and advocacy groups to deliberate on human rights priorities across the continent.
The session provides a vital platform to advance discussions on justice, reparations, and human rights protection, particularly for marginalized and displaced populations.
As part of this session, a dedicated side event titled “Borderless Justice: Advancing Freedom of Movement for Forcibly Displaced Persons in the East and Horn of Africa” will shed light on the right to freedom of movement as both a fundamental human right and a form of reparative justice for forcibly displaced persons.
The objectives of the side event are:
- Amplify Voices: Provide a platform for forcibly displaced persons to share lived experiences on movement and inclusion.
- Advance Reparative Justice: Explore freedom of movement as a dimension of reparations and justice.
- Shape Policy: Propose actionable recommendations for states, regional bodies, and partners to align laws and policies with international standards.
- Promote Dignity & Inclusion: Advocate for mobility as key to autonomy, economic opportunity, and durable solutions.
The side event will feature a panel discussion with speakers representing:
- Refugee-led organizations and displaced persons
- The Special Rapporteur on Refugees, Asylum Seekers, IDPs, and Migrants
- Government representatives and National Human Rights Institutions
- Civil society and faith-based organizations
The event will take place on Friday 24th October 2025 from 2:30pm to 4:30pm at the Sir Dawda Kairaba Jawara International Conference Centre, Banjul, The Gambia.
