Urban Savings and Loans Associations

Re:Build is enabling financial inclusion of refugees and vulnerable host residents through supporting Urban Savings and Loans Associations (USLAs).

Urban Savings and Loan Associations - Re:Build

The groups are trained on principles of USLAs, record keeping and the process of developing a group constitution.

The USLA groups which consists of 15-25 members are provided with seed funding after 3 months of training to boost their savings kitty and increase their borrowing pool. The group members continue to borrow from this fund to boost their individual businesses. The group cycle is 9 to 12 months. Groups are facilitated to register with the Ministry of Labour and Social Protection in Nairobi and the Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development in Kampala.

The urban saving schemes encourage social cohesion as well as provide a mechanism for refugees and vulnerable hosts that cannot access formal credit or sustain a bank account to save and invest in their businesses. The groups have since been linked with Financial Service Providers for financial literacy and inclusion training and supported to open individual bank accounts.

In Uganda, Re:Build has collaborated with the Ensibuuko platform to digitize USLA groups' record keeping. This has helped ease the group relations with financial and lending institutions in Kampala.

In Kenya, Re:Build has collaborated with Equity Bank for financial linkages and trainings to support 13 USLA groups.
