Financial services are an important avenue for refugees to save money and access loans.
With increased access to financial services, refugees can venture into income-generating activities and contribute to their host countries' economies. Currently, the Financial Service Providers' (FSPs) efforts to lend refugees are hampered by supply and demand bottlenecks, including absence of collateral, limited financial literacy, risk of relocation, strict know your customer requirements and limited understanding of financing needs. These limitations substantially increase the cost of lending especially in the absence of loan guarantee mechanisms. |
Re:Build designed the Results Based Facility -Loan Guarantee Fund as a proof of concept that refugees are bankable. Through this facility, Re:Build is partnering with FSPs to provide financial services like loans to clients. The program is also providing capacity building for Financial Institutions to improve their understanding and alignment to better accommodate refugee needs. Similarly, refugees’ awareness about existing financial services is being improved.
Through the RBF, the program is targeting to offer financial services to 500 clients who have received training on financial literacy, opened bank accounts and are affiliated to an Urban Savings and Loan Associations (USLA).
