The African Union's 39th Ordinary Session

The African Union’s 39th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government is scheduled to take place from 14–15 February 2026 at the African Union Headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The Session will focus on key continental priorities, including peace and security, water resource management, and the Agenda 2063 theme on sustainable water availability and safe sanitation systems.

The Assembly will be preceded by the 51st Ordinary Session of the Permanent Representatives’ Committee (PRC), to be held from 12 – 30 January 2026, and the 48th Ordinary Session of the Executive Council, scheduled for 11 – 12 February 2026. Together, these meetings constitute the African Union’s formal statutory and decision-making cycle, culminating in the Assembly’s endorsement of continental policy directions and priorities for the year ahead. The next steps will be to lobby the Africa Union summit during the Assembly Session taking place from 14–15 February 2026.

Re:BUiLD alongside Lutheran World Foundation, Independent Diplomat et al will  support curating sessions in the margin advocating advance discussions on  freedom of movement and access to documentation for refugees and asylum seekers, and deepen engagement with regional and continental stakeholders on policy and practice reforms around the thematic area.
