Andre Champions Climate Advocacy Through Green Storytelling

In a world grappling with the escalating effects of climate change, Tukuza Meleki Andre described as an agent of transformation, is morphing from a young refugee into a passionate climate advocate, thanks to the  Re:BUiLD Program. His journey exemplifies the powerful impact of education, empowerment, and community-driven change.

Through the partnership between Raising Gabdho Foundation and the Re:BUiLD program, Andre has gained vital skills in green digital storytelling, graphic design, video editing, and sustainability. These tools have enabled him to amplify stories that inspire action stories, that not only raise awareness but also spark real change. Andre’s work is available in different blogs accessed on the SustainableLenz.green platform. These blogs explain how he has addressed relevant topics such as climate action, waste management, and smart agriculture. This digital presence is a demonstration of Re:BUiLD’s support in amplifying voices advocating for climate related solutions.

  • Andre’s influence transcends  far beyond the digital space. Recognizing the power of peer-to-peer learning, he played a key role in conducting   a Training of Trainers (ToT) program training fifteen (15) youths in renewable energy technologies initiatives, equipping them with skills to pursue green and increase production of energy efficient products among the youth.

The specifics are narrated below.

  • Black Soldier Fly (BSF) Farming at Kibuli SS and Tropical High School:

Andre teaches students at Kibuli SS and Tropical High School about waste reduction and sustainable agriculture through Black Soldier Fly farming. The Black Soldier Fly (Hermetia illucens) is an insect species known for its ability to efficiently break down organic waste into nutrient-rich compost while producing larvae that serve as a high-protein animal feed. Andre has set up and maintained BSF systems, emphasising their dual benefits: reducing waste and creating a sustainable feed source.

  • Tree Planting and Biodiversity Promotion at Namirembe Infant School:

Andre spearheaded a tree-planting initiative at Namirembe Primary School, aiming to foster environmental awareness and resource conservation. Beyond tree planting, the project introduced sustainable herb gardening using bamboo planters a fast-growing, carbon-absorbing material. Students cultivated mint, oregano, rosemary, and thyme, learning about their medicinal properties and environmental benefits.

These efforts have resulted in the planting of 10,000 trees in the past year, projected to absorb 220,000 kg of CO₂ annually. This impact is expected to double within the next five years, further enhancing carbon sequestration and biodiversity.

  • Paper Recycling and Sustainability at Police Children’s Schools:
At Police Children’s Schools, Andre empowers students to reduce waste through paper recycling, promoting sustainability and mental wellness. Through this initiative, schools collectively recycle 5 tons of paper annually, saving 85 trees and conserving 35,000 gallons of water each year. Beyond environmental impact, the program incorporates art therapy for mental wellness. Students use recycled paper for creative activities, expressing emotions through painting and design. They also write affirmations like “I am strong” and “I can make a difference”, transforming their artwork into sources of encouragement. This approach nurtures self-expression, emotional resilience, and a deeper connection to sustainability.

  • Training of Trainers (ToT) and Renewable Energy Training:
In addition to school-based initiatives. Out of the Fifteen (15) youth trained through Training of Trainers module, six of them advanced to become trainers under the Training of Trainers (TOT) model while four others, are leading waste management and recycling campaigns. Andre's impact is felt in schools like Kibuli Secondary School, Police Children Primary School, and Kibuli Secondary School, Police Children's School (Kibuli), Namirembe Infant School, Tropical High School ( Kabalagala)  where he actively leads impactful climate action initiatives in several schools, focusing on youth engagement and environmental sustainability

These efforts have significantly reduced waste and engaged local communities in adopting sustainable practices. Schools have successfully integrated BSF farming, collectively processing 2 tons of organic waste per month and generating 400 kg of larvae biomass for poultry and fish farming. This initiative significantly lowers reliance on traditional animal feed, reducing costs and promoting circular waste management. Andre’s work is fostering a deep sense of responsibility and unity among youth and Andre’s work with community leaders has led to a tangible reduction in waste and an increase in the adoption of sustainable practices. Through Andre’s climate advocacy efforts, there has been a notable improvement in waste management, tree planting, and the adoption of renewable energy solutions. Andre’s dedication to peer-to-peer learning and youth engagement is sparking a collective sense of responsibility for the environment, uniting the community for positive change among community leaders, reinforcing the power of collective action for the environment.

Renewable Energy Advocacy

Andre has actively promoted renewable energy adoption within his community, encouraging households and institutions to transition from fossil fuels and firewood to sustainable alternatives. His advocacy has led to:

  • A 30% increase in renewable energy adoption within the community.

  • 100 households transitioning to clean cooking solutions, reducing dependency on and firewood and charcoal while lowering greenhouse gas emissions.

"Working with the youth is proving to be my greatest reward," Andre says. "Seeing them understand how their actions can shape the future, and knowing I’m playing a part in that, is everything.

At a glance: Waste Management Impact

  • 10 tons of organic waste diverted from landfills monthly through BSF farming, reducing methane emissions by 80%.

  • 5 tons of paper recycled annually, saving 85 trees and 35,000 gallons of water.

Tree Planting Impact

  • 10,000 trees planted in the past year, projected to absorb 220,000 kg of CO₂ annually, with an anticipated doubling of impact within five years.

Renewable Energy Adoption Impact

  • 30% increase in renewable energy adoption.

  • 100 households transitioned to clean energy solutions.

  • 20 biogas digesters installed, cutting reliance on firewood and fossil fuels.

These initiatives collectively contribute to waste reduction, carbon sequestration, and sustainable energy adoption, reinforcing long-term environmental resilience.
